The blogging guru, can't remember who he was, said that bloggers should disable email sign up for their blogs. In fact, he bragged that he had just done so...and implored bloggers to do so, as well.
His reasoning, as I recall, was that email notifications (where the reader gets blog posts delivered to his/her inbox) were "passive". That, if readers were getting blog posts via email, they weren't actually visiting the blog.
Well, in my universe, upteen people are vying for my attention via gazillions of social media outlets. No one--no matter how brilliant--is on my "must hang on every word posted to Twitter, Facebook or Google+" list.
Thus, how in the world would I catch their blog posts except for email notification? (I don't use RSS readers).
Email delivery is convenient. I can read the entire blog post via email, or file it away in a folder for later viewing. If I'm compelled by a post, I will absolutely go to the blog itself to make a comment. (In fact, I just did so a little while ago at Amanda Donnelly's 78 Whispers in My Ear right here).
Amanda is an insightful Tarotist and all-around cool human being...but, I wouldn't know of her latest posts if I didn't subscribe to her blog via email (and she's a Facebook friend, mind you!).
Same with all the other wonderful blogs I subscribe to.
So I can't help but ask myself "What was this blogger guru guy thinking?" Does he really think that even our most ardent fans (or foes) have the time to beat a path to our blog door, every day, to see if we've made a new post? (Psycho stalkers aside, of course).
I mean, doesn't this seem like very bad advice to you? We blog because we want to be communicate. Why not make it as easy as possible for our readers to be a part of the conversation?
What say you, readers? Can you see any benefit to not having an email subscribe option for your blog? What about you, blog readers? How do you prefer to get your notifications?
