February 3rd is the official day of Imbolc this year. Imbolc is the celebration that we are halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Even amidst the snow and cold, the days are getting longer, the sun is a little higher in the sky. The darkness is yielding to the light. In honor of the day, here are some cards for meditation:
The Queen of Wands: This fiery, energetic queen (from Legacy of the Divine Tarot by Ciro Marchetti) calls to mind the goddess Brigid (later St. Brigid), who many honor on Imbolc. Brigid is the goddess who was reborn from the crone of winter to the maiden of spring as an aspect of the Divine Feminine. She is associated with light and regeneration. In her honor, it is traditional to light many candles on Imbolc. In the Christian tradition, this holiday is called Candlemas, and is a celeberation of the purification of Mary. Many Christian churches bless candles to be used for the year on this day.
Judgment: This card is called "Rebirth" in many tarot decks, as in this card from the Sacred Circle Tarot by Anna Franklin and Paul Mason. We're beginning to come out of hibernation, the days are longer, and even if it's still cold, we know spring is just around the corner. In some places plants and flowers are just beginning to peek through the snow or soil. If we're lucky enough to live in a warmer climate, it's now warm enough to spend time outside. It truly feels like we're coming alive again.
Ace of Air (Swords): This image from the Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert is the essence of the coming spring; a butterfly has emerged from his chrysalis, transformed into a thing of beauty, as the first flowers of the year begin to bloom. Imbolc is a time to let the light of new ideas take flight, let new inspirations bloom. A time to emerge gratefully into a coming spring, which holds all possibilities.
So this Imbolc, let's open the windows, let in some fresh air (even if it's chilly air!), and get re-energized and reawakened to the challenge and opportunity of 2014!
Happy Imbolc, and Bright Blessings!
