I don't know about you, but I absolutely start pulling my hair out when someone sits down and says, “Oh, just a general....”
It's just all so vague at the outset. But I do it all the time. What I've realized is that the question emerges as the reading goes on...and the querant starts to talk....what you are left with, at the end of the reading, is the QUESTION. Often, then the querant wants to go on and get cards on that followup question...but it's not really a followup, because there was no question expressed explicitly in the first place....
So why not THIS? Devise a spread expressly to help this person come up with their question...let the cards tell you/them/us what the question is.... tell the querant, “Alright, lets use the cards to come up with your question” .Lay some cards, and then start reading those; usually the querant will start to talk, and then you have your question...or at least are in the ballpark....you can address their concerns, and say, (for example,) “So would you say your question is about this newly emerging relationship that you are developing online, and you want to know more about the person and might this be going anywhere?”
When they say “yes”, then pick up the original cards, whether you have finished with them or not, and do a NEW reading based on that question....because it will be more focused now that you have something to “go on”.
I find the cards are better and quicker at pulling teeth than I am....and I'd rather let them do the work of it all.
If the person never opens up, and never frames a question from this process, they may have gotten enough just from those few “general” cards to take away and chew on. Usually I find that within a few cards, the question comes out. Sometimes, it's all about asking the right question....so if you can lure the person out a bit, usually they will spill. Sometimes to start, they are really unaware of the question they are harboring beneath the surface.
