Welcome to the inaugural edition of WriterScopes! To find out how this works, feel free to check out my introductory post. Or, just locate your Zodiac sign based on your birthday--and read on! Images are from the Snowland Deck, created by me and my artist husband, Ron.
Aries: March 21- April 19(4 Material) – This card shows Ebenezer Scrooge in his miserly state. When applied to writing, it advises conservation of energy, time and money—all material concerns. Make a concerted effort to plug up any leaks of these precious resources. Pay attention to ways you fritter away the hours—time better spent on your writing life and current projects. Ask yourself, Do I really need the newest writing book, software or leather journal? Is watching five hours of TV a night putting me closer to my writing goals? Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are spend time wisely, conserve energy and save money. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I value my writing life and spend resources accordingly.”
Taurus: April 20 - May 20(Youth – Material) – Earthly Taurus, the Youth – Material card features a brownie-like barn custodian from Swedish folklore. According to legend, Tomten would only clean barns and take care of livestock if the host farmer provided a reward—usually a bowl of porridge with a pat of butter on top. If the Tomten didn’t get what he wanted or expected—well, let’s just say he threw a temper tantrum! In your writing life, examine if you’re pursuing pats on the head from your peers, mentors or family members. As the Paula Deen situation shows, popularity and the good opinion of others can change in a heartbeat, but what remains steady is your dedication to the writing craft. Do the work for yourself, not for the praise of onlookers. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are writing is its own reward, fans are fickle and fame is fleeting. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I stay focused on my writing.”
Gemini: May 21- June 21 (6 Material) – Airy Gemini, the 6 Material card shows a donation kettle at Christmas: a mendicant gives his last coin, while a wealthy individual reluctantly drops in a penny. In some ways, this card is about sacrifice versus stinginess. When it comes to writing, what are you willing to sacrifice? What needs protected or preserved? It’s time to prioritize creative projects and allocate your energy, time and resources to what matters most to you. Always remember that the success of others in no way takes away from your own. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are be generous to other writers, invest in your writing life and avoid a scarcity mindset. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “There’s more than enough for everyone”.
Cancer: June 22 - July 22(The Sun) – Happy Birthday, Watery Cancer! With The Sun card peeking out at you, it’s your time to shine! Get out there and hobnob with other writers at conferences, book signings and social groups. If you’re already published, volunteer to do a reading from your work at a local library or bookstore—or contact at BlogTalkRadio Host specializing in your genre, offering to give an interview. Another idea: consider putting your poems, stories or book in audio form. Draw writing inspiration from playwrights, live productions, comedians and stage actors—because there’s more than one way to “save the cat”! Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are network with other writers, get seen in your community and learn from the stage. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I allow myself to be seen”.
Leo: July 23 - August 22(The Carousel) – Fiery Leo, The Carousel is equivalent to the Wheel of Fortune (not the game show, the card). It encourages you to go with the flow and recognize the vagaries of life. Some days, your writing flows as fast and furious as Jimmy Swaggart’s tears on Repentance Day. On others, the words flow like a snail on Nytol. “To everything there is a season” may be a cliché of biblical, Byrd-like proportion—but it’s true. If you’re on fire, blaze across the page! If you’re tired, read, watch a movie or nap. Fortune favors the prepared, so whatever ebb or eddy you find yourself in, trust it. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are accept where you’re at, embrace fluctuation and relax into the turn. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I go with the flow.”
Virgo: August 23 - September 22(The Sun) – Earthy Virgo, you get The Sun this month, too! Strut your stuff visually by making a book, poem or story trailer. Or, create a Pinterest board dedicated to one or more of your works. Share your enthusiasm and inspirations with other writers, because it’s contagious! Don’t be afraid to be “on stage”; after all, how we will find out about your work unless you tell us? Grab the mic and raise your voice, knowing that just about every writer experiences “exposure trepidation” at one time or another. Don those sunglasses because you’ve got a bright writing future! Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are share enthusiasm, spread inspiration and display your talents visually. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “It’s my time to shine”.
Libra: September 23 - October 22(8 Mental) – Airy Libra, the 8 Mental card says that you’re a prisoner of your own thought patterns when it comes to writing. This month, focus on ways to break out of creative ruts—take chances, do free writing, practice morning pages (ala Julia Cameron), play with Magnetic Poetry…anything to get you out of that self-imposed cage of fear. The best cure for immobility is to MOVE, so write as if your life depended on it. (Make sure you give your Inner Critic a chill pill, while you’re at it). Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are move past fear, cut the cords and walk out of your mental cage. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I am free to write what I want”.
Scorpio: October 23 - November 21(4 Mental) – Watery Scorpio, the 4 Mental card shows a patient ice fisherman staying while others leave. Talent can definitely take you some place when it comes to writing, but what separates the men from the boys (so to speak) is staying power. Trust that the foundation you’ve laid, the platform that you’ve built and the time you’ve dedicated to honing your craft will pay solid dividends. When you’re tempted to quit, hang in there! You never know when the big catch is right around the corner… Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are stay put, center yourself and trust your preparation. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “My persistence pays off.”
Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 (8 Material) – Fiery Sagittarius, the 8 Material card shows a magical spider weaving an intricate snowflake web. This card encourages you to invite complexity into your prose. You may have been playing it safe, afraid to use “big words” or shying away from literary approaches to story. The fact is, not everyone is destined to write like Hemingway or Carver. If you end up embracing a stripped-down style, that’s fine—but don’t rob yourself of the joys of intricacy (in case you end up in the Proust or Joyce camp). Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are convolution, filigree and sophistication. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I adorn my prose with ornamentation.”
Capricorn: December 22 - January 19(Strength) – Earthy Capricorn, the Strength card is one of poise, grace and, well, strength. This isn’t the Samson type of strength, but more like the Cirque du Soleil variety. Just as rigorous athleticism underscores the elegance of professional figure skaters, so, too, does regular writing practice and attention to mechanics support polished prose. So get out on the ice flourish your ribbon and flex your strengths on the page (polar bear, optional). Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are grace under pressure, stretching, and balance. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I test my strengths by moving out of familiar territory.”
Aquarius: January 20 - February 18(8 Material) – Airy Aquarius, you, too, get the 8 Material card for this month! Did you know that spiders make the same web over and over and over? These amazing artists pull off daily design feats but, for them, it’s all in a day’s work. Sociologist Malcolm Gladwell said that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill, so remain dedicated to learning the architecture of language and story. What may seem like grunt work right now is contributing to that “someday” work that readers will one day enjoy and share with others. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are repetition, dedication and practice. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I am dedicated to the art and craft of writing.”
Pisces: February 19 - March 20(4 Mental) – Watery Pisces, you, too get the 4 Mental card! For you, this month is a time of quiet reflection and getting your proverbial writing ducks in a row. Allow your thoughts time to swirl about, congeal and break apart again. Yes, take the time to capture them on paper or pixels, but realize the fluid nature of creative ideas. Stillness and contemplation allows you to go far, deep and wide; it’s not laziness—it’s gestation. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are stillness, quietude and fluidity. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I allow myself to relax and my thoughts to wander.”
