Welcome to the August 2015 edition of WriterScopes! To find out how this works, feel free to check out my introductory post here. Or, just locate your Zodiac sign based on your birthday--and read on! Images are from the Snowland Deck, created by moi and my artist husband, Ron. You can get your very own set of creativity cards at SnowlandDeck.com.
Aries: March 21- April 19 (Magician) –Fiery Aries, this card encourages you to recognize and utilize all writerly tools at your disposal. Now is not the time to let your best assets remain dormant. Imagine your pen as a wand: magically, your thoughts and emotions become ink on paper or pixels on screen—all because you willed it to be. What power! What opportunity! And if you’re considering specializing your knowledge or researching a narrow field, this is a great month to begin. Or, as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, would say, “Make it so!”. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are use all my tools, focus my will and concentrate on a specific goal. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “Writing is magic.”
Taurus: April 20 - May 20 (2 Emoting) – Earthly Taurus, this month is all about intimacy. When it comes to writing, this could mean baring your soul via memoir, revealing rawness in poetry or even dipping your toes into the genres of romance or erotica. If you’re a non-fiction writer, explore authentic relationships and close connections (either on the page or in “real life”). Don’t be afraid of the lingering close-up; let your eyes, mind and heart caress your object. Then, be bold and tell us what you see. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are stay close to your subject, be vulnerable and share your innermost ideas. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I allow myself to be touched by my topic.”
Gemini: May 21- June 21 (8 Energy) – Airy Gemini, do you feel that need for speed? If not, let me to light a match under your behind: The 8 Energy card embodies shot arrows, sprint runners and drag races. It’s a magnificent spurt of energy that propels you forward—if not to the finish line, then at least closer to your goals. Get your words on the page as fast as you can, no censoring and no editing. Allow inspiration and passion to gush like a full-on firefighter house. Don’t dial it back—and don’t allow anyone to stem the flow. If you have the energy and stamina to pull marathon writing sessions—or even pen a book in a month (or join Camp NaNoWriMo)—now’s the time to run, not walk. Go! Go! Go! Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are full throttle, don’t hold back and work as fast as you can. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I create fast and free”.
Cancer: June 22 - July 22 (9 Energy) – Watery Cancer, fellow author Lupa Greenwolf recently said “The 9 of Wands (9 Energy) card is like fighting the Boss Level in a video game”. When we wrestle with a huge manuscript or creative project, nearing the end, it can feel a lot like fighting a formidable Boss. Will you triumph? Will you even finish the game? Know that if you’ve come this far, you can surely beat that “Boss” and finish what you’ve started! As Anne Lamott says, take it “bird by bird”. Sure, at this point, the birds look more like ostriches than finches—but you’ve plenty of practice, finished work and battle scars to prove that you can, and will, prevail. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are gear up for the final push, remember past conquests and stay in the ring. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I am determined to succeed.”
Leo: July 23 - August 22 (10 Energy) – Happy Birthday, Fiery Leo! Sometimes, when we’ve accomplished a big writing goal, snagged a book contract, finished a novel or won an award, there’s the pressure for a repeat performance—or something even greater. Whether internal or external, stemming from yourself or others, such pressure is like an elephant sitting on your soul: it’s virtually impossible to create something fresh or inspired under the crushing weight of expectations. The card encourages to you relax, drop the sky-high to-do list and give yourself a major break. Breathe—deeply and often. Conserve and guard your energy. Take care of your physical body and psychological well-being before burnout sets in. Time is not of the essence here; you can always try to swallow a rhino another day. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are unburden yourself, drop the load and delegate tasks. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “Enough is enough!”
Virgo: August 23 - September 22 (Quester Emoting) – Earthy Virgo, this is a card of wanting what you can’t have. It’s the snowman lusting at the window for a statuesque hot stove or the tuna yearning to become one with the eagle—a mismatch made in hell, if you will. Instead of tilting your wooden sword towards towering windmills, take a good, hard look at why you want what you (think you) want. Are you comparing yourself to others? Did some “writing expert” tell you that all scribes attempt to achieve what you’re going after? Did a well-meaning (but misinformed) friend encourage you to tread the path you’re on? Now, dig deep into your values—what’s really important to you at the end of the day—and measure your current trajectory with what you find. It’s better to throw away a map to the wrong (for you) destination than following the directions to someone else’s destiny. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are find your own North Star, question writerly infatuations and align creative quests to deeply held values. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I determine what really matters and adjust accordingly”.
Libra: September 23 - October 22 (Strength) – Airy Libra, the type of “strength” indicated here is more “grace under pressure” than brute strength. It speaks of finesse, diplomacy and knowing when to speak—or keep your mouth shut. In terms of writing, it cautions against “beating up” your readers with heavy-handed prose, pontification or inflammatory baiting. You may be on thin ice right now, so watch your step. Err on the side of caution. As a Libra, these type of tactics comes rather naturally “in real life”—but it’s time to make sure this balanced approach also reaches the page and into your creative methodology. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are play it safe, tread carefully and walk with grace. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I display courage through restraint”.
Scorpio: October 23 - November 21 (Removal) – Watery Scorpio, it’s time to blow up your blog, book or project. Ha, just kidding! But, Removal is a card that often encourages you to “wipe the slate” clean—even if it means “destroying your darlings” (it’s the Tarot’s equivalent of The Tower). It could indicate that it’s time to edit like hell, truncating elaborate sentences, pruning purple prose and eliminating run-ons. Yet, it’s just as likely pointing to ridding yourself of old structures, techniques, mindsets and writing groups/friends that no longer serve your highest good. If something destructive this way comes (or came), know that even forests benefit from lightning strikes and raging fires. In fact, some hard seeds that will turn into glorious flowers only open under that kind of extreme heat. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are sever unhealthy ties, discard flimsy writing material and start from scratch. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I rise from the ashes as a new, creative being.”
Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 (Mother Nature) – Fiery Sagittarius, your card this month is the equivalent of The Empress—the energy of abundant ideas, fertile imagination and rampant creativity. The muse is working overtime on your behalf, so now’s the time to sit down, get out your pen (or keyboard) and write, write, write! If you’ve been feeling There’s a book in me, you’re right. Like a pregnant Mama, you need to nurture that life, feed it what it needs and prepare for giving “birth”. New art forms may be blossoming in your artistic backyard, too, so remain wide open to planting gardens you’ve never considered before now. Allow for wildness, color and rapid growth. Before you know it, you’ll be surrounded by the fruits of your patient labor. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are abundance, fecundity and expansion. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I nurture growth, feed creativity and water inspiration.”
Capricorn: December 22 - January 19 (Commitment) – Earthy Capricorn, it’s time to “put a ring on it”. No, not with your significant other—but with your creative projects. To achieve the kind of success you crave, you must become “married” to your manuscript. Chain yourself to a desk, because the care and feeding of my WIP will be your solemn vow this month. Right underneath bodily needs and familial priorities goes “THE WORK”. Whether poem, screenplay, novel, short story or non-fiction tome, it’s time to put THE WORK above time wasters like texting, streaming Netflix, watching porn, pinning recipes or silently stalking your High School boyfriend on Facebook. Yep, it’s time to put your big girl pants on and commit—to an agent, your publisher, your writing career, or the project you’ve “been meaning to” work on. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are dedication to the work, promises made (and kept) and faithfulness. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I commit myself to what matters and stay with it until it's finished.”
Aquarius: January 20 - February 18 (2 Material) – Airy Aquarius, you’re busier more than a one-armed octopus with hives! How in the world do you keep all those balls in the air? You’re excelling at multi-tasking right now, but be careful: what goes up, must come down. If you can handle upteen projects right now, great! But take a moment to look at long-term goals (and your calendar) to assess what might happen if you can’t keep up your current pace. Nothing wrong with socking away excess stories or blog posts for the future, but make sure no one in your camp is feeling left out—especially a spouse or child. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are flexibility, juggling responsibilities and being a Jack-of-all-Trades. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I balance my projects with ease.”
Pisces: February 19 - March 20 (Nurturer Material) – Watery Pisces, it’s important to carefully gather data, catalogue your findings and determine practical applications to the results. If you’re a non-fiction writer, check (and re-check) your sources. If you’re a technical writer, don’t miss the beauty in the details—or forget the reason you started down this path in the first place (hint: curiosity, wonderment and intrigue). If you’re a mystery writer, pay attention to weapons, procedure and forensics. Are you a historical fiction writer? Be sure of the mannerisms, dress and language of the times. Your WriterScopes Key Ideas (WriSKI) for this month are resourcefulness, practicality and exactitude. Your WriterScopes Mantra (WriSM) is “I cultivate awareness of the specific, the intricate and the natural.”
